The Men of K-pop Are the Reigning Street Stars of Seoul Fashion Week

Last summer, I spent three weeks tromping around Seoul in a pair of black-and-white clodhoppers. They were ugly, oxford-style bowling shoes with thick three-inch platforms, and I’d have never dreamt of wearing them if not for the street style stars I’d seen around Gangnam. They paired the shoes with cropped jacquard flares and a navy cashmere sweatshirt, or denim culottes and a baseball tee: ensembles that somehow made the shoes look sculptural, not clunky. And from floral brocade blazers to paisley hair wraps, the rest of their style was equally infectious. By the end of my stay, I’d fallen hard for the city’s best dressed: The men whose bold, androgynous looks define what’s most exciting about Seoul fashion right now.

Ever since Carol Lim and Humberto Leon showcased the city in 2012, stocking Opening Ceremony with cult designs by Goen.J and Juun.J, Seoul’s fashion cred has been on the rise. On Friday, Seoul Fashion Week kicked off with a Boon the Shop opening party, where Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez of Proenza Schouler, Haider Ackermann, Leigh Lezark, and Anna Dello Russo mingled with K-pop stars like G-Dragon and Taeyang, who sported all-black looks accessorized with a dash of plum lipstick—not at all outré for the bombastic Korean idols. The duo’s position as unofficial style ambassadors is fitting, considering that without their influence, the country’s burgeoning fashion industry may not even exist.
Look at G-Dragon. Crooning for Big Bang may have launched his career, but he is now as well known for collaborating with Nicola Formichetti and Mugler as with Snoop Dogg. As one of the first celebrities to champion Seoul’s gender-neutral fashions, G-Dragon is not afraid to go big, from an arm full of gold Tiffany bangles to rainbow-striped fur. Two weeks ago, he was photographed with Karl Lagerfeld—or “with KING,” as he put it—wearing a Last Tango in Paris–style wide-brimmed hat perched atop a mess of curls, with blue velvet pants and a Chanel bouclé jacket. Where Kanye West couldn’t wear a Givenchy kilt without sparking a media storm, G-Dragon was applauded for doing the same (and has been doing it for years).
Note: Parts without mentioning G-Dragon are omitted.
